Personalized Medicine

Ninety percent of prescription drugs don't work about 50% of the time.1 But, more effective, more personalized medicine is becoming possible as the cost of decoding human DNA drops -- from $3 billion in 1993 to a few thousand dollars today.

Doctors will be able to predict the diseases you're likely to get long before they appear in lab tests and prescribe treatments tailored specifically to work based on your genetic make-up.

Pharmaceutical companies have already begun switching from mass-production to developing drugs custom-made to work for specific genetic profiles, a change that could transform their approach to everything from cancer and depression to heart disease and Alzheimer's.

Technology start-ups and insurance giants are creating tools that add genetic data to electronic medical records, making it possible for patients to shop for providers with the best results treating patients like them.

Because medical spending accounts for almost 20% of U.S. consumer spending,2 this new, more patient-centric system could save the health care industry billions of dollars a year and create huge new investing opportunities throughout the economy.

"Yes. I want the insurance actuaries to know my genetic makeup so that they can adjust my premiums accordingly." Nondiscrimination laws have been in the works from genetic preconditioning since the concept of personalized medicine. That is a non-issue. I had the opportunity to visit a research lab in Seattle, WA who is designing systems to quickly and efficiently put personalized medicine into practice. Please read my article about it at http://discussted.blogspot.com/2012/09/susan-solomon-promise-of-research-with.html
